Garry grew up in this very spot, venturing around the harbour, looking out into the world and appreciating all the great qualities the villages had to offer a young scot.
Limekilns & Charlestown truly are gems, with amazing people.
Having been born at a hospital in Auchterarder, Garry grew up in the villages with his grandmother, aunts and uncles. He loved growing up and venturing around the harbour with friends.
As a young man who grew up in a village, Garry wanted to see the world and prove his worth. Despite being secretly underage at the time, it didn't take much for him to decide on joining the Merchant, after all it was a harbour village, with many wind worn figures sharing stories of the seas.
Before leaving for the Merchant, a local girl who regularly visited her grandmother in the village that lived right across from Garry, took a liking. Helen, with a strong character, wasn't particularly swayed by the others who admired Garry so she took the opportunity to learn what she could about him.
They created a strong relationship with each other and quickly became enamoured. When Garry set out on his first voyages, Helen would sit on the hill over Brucehaven stables with a small mirror, glinting the sun towards the ships when they set out of the Forth alongside the village.
Through the 60's and 70's Garry took the leap to running his own businesses after the Merchant.
From his own taxi service which had several cars and even saw him ferry Sean Connery during his prime, Garry also ran the Anchorage (funded with a £500 spot-the-ball win). A fish and chip shop which today is operated as 'Coorie by the Coast'.
Since a chip shop in a small Scottish village only really profited during the summer days, the next endeavour he started was a security firm, a one-man guard operation serving Marconi in Donibristle.
As someone who enjoyed music, liked to dance and overall enjoy life, Garry had many favourites.
From Elvis, to Marty Robbins, Jimmy Dean and even Abba, he particularly loved The Gambler by Kenny Rogers.
While you're here, looking out toward the Limekilns Pier, consider supporting the local initiative to maintain its foundations by leaving an engraved stone.
The initiative seeks support from locals and visitors alike to purchase an engraved stone that will set a path along the side of the pier and support the restoration work.
